Passion For Fashion

12 May

I love clothes so much! I don’t reflect this love of clothes very much
in what I do wear, I am too scared to wear the clothes I love and I
think it’s good to know your limits, you know? For example, I love the whole fluro
deal that’s happening at the moment, it’s exceptionally funky and super fun, but I’d never pull it off. I am too old and too pale, nor
could I stand to attract the attention such clothes would command. But
I love other people wearing it. Like tunic tops and mini dresses, they are cute and can look amazing but I can’t pull them off, but I like to see other people wear them well.

For this reason, I love to look at Hel Looks. It’s just a site that has lots of pictures of different people (young and old) on the streets of Helsinki. I love to see the outfits people have put together, I think the way people choose to clothe themselves is terribly interesting. Most of it is not clothes I’d ever wear, but almost every outfit is outstanding! I think the clothes you choose and the way people put together an outfit says an incredible amount about the type of person you are. Not so much in terms of the trend or look you are going for, about about the smaller details.

Sometimes the little captions on the Hel Looks pictures are slightly bizarre. I’m not sure of maybe they translate badly if they weren’t first quoted in English or if the people are just taking the piss and making up crazy stuff, my most favorite is this girl, she is inspired by "Frida Kahlo and rabid dogs". If I was ever asked, I think I would be inspired by the moss that grows in between pavement (I used to be obsessed with this when I was little, it feels like carpet, but it’s outside!) and toast (it’s just random enough to work). Also bizarre, when is the last time you saw 12 year olds dressed like this? (I smell wrongness, though I am so stealing that method of scarf folding).

I think because I love such a huge range of clothes, styles and fabrics, I have trouble choosing what bits of all of that I want for myself. Ask Bestie, I am the single most frustrating person to shop with because I am always looking at clothes or fabrics but I will never try on or buy most of it because it’s not what I choose to wear. It also makes D’Mummy insane but she’s learning to live with it. I would love to have a single "look". Some people have such an amazing personal style that they always look fabulous and never ever sell out to trends or anything.

My aunt is the most perfect example of this, she always looks fantastic, without exception. She’s an ex-flight attendant which might explain her inherent…glamor, but she is just awesome. It’s the strangest thing because she always looks "current" but never, ever follows trends, I have no idea how she does it. She is the same as as D’Mummy so maybe she’s just had a longer time than me to work out her own style, or is in an in born thing you can never learn? Do you guys know people like that? Who just always look awesome and really "authentic" to their own self, while still being stylish? I am sure it’s near impossible, if you’ve learned how to do it, please share your secret!!

I think I have managed to sort out my hair, in terms of what I really like and isn’t necessarily trendy or "safe", but the clothing part, not much of a clue. I will declare myself a work in progress!

Well, it’s safe to say this post is mostly rubbish, it’s 11pm on Saturday night and I am yet to even open a Word document  to start my assignment, oh well, there is always tomorrow…or should I say ONLY tomorrow, seeing as it’s due Monday. Eh, it’s 700 words. I know I can pump that out without so much as a conscious thought (evidenced by this blog) so it’s not so much the writing of the assignment that is slow, just the actual starting.

It’s raining so I am going to go and fall asleep now, being able to fall asleep to the sound of fairly heavy rain is a very rare luxury these days!

I don’t like the scarves. I see people wearing those same scarves a lot — do they not come in any other colours or patterns? Maybe I’m getting old but I just don’t understand the scarf thing, looks like they expect to get caught in a sandstorm. And if you want to find really disturbing looks, google “gothic lolita”.

Fashion mostly escapes me, or I will find that several years ago I would be really fashionable now. I don’t know what my look is…other than scruffy perhaps.

I don’t have a look either. I’m so used to wearing corporate clothes, that I can’t quite get this “casual” thing right!

I have been wearing the same jeans for 5 days now though… So maybe I like grunge?? ;)

Good luck with the assignment, I have a 2000 word one due tomorrow that I have written precisely zero words on. Took me forever to find the compulsary 7 peer-reviewed journal articles for references. It’s on the cervical cancer vaccine – wanna write it for me???? please…….

I also love so many clothes I would never wear…a bit sad really. But as you said, good to know your own limits.
Wasn’t the rain great on Sat night!! Pitty I had people over for an outdoor breakfast on Sunday morning and everything was still wet…oh well the rain was good to see!

Ah-ha! A fashion friend :) I’m the original nineteen year old Vogue fanatic. Or maybe not the original, and certainly not the best. But one of them.

    You’d LOVE two websites:

    http://thesartorialist.blogspot.com/

(and they recently did a section on my beloved Stockholm)

Jay, I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like scarves. I am WILD about the but Brisbane weather does not require them, which is why I have lots of cotton scarves. Gothica Lolita is interesting, I think it’s very cute in a creepy way which is exactly their point, but it’s not something I’d choose to do!

Scruffy can be a look, effortlessly scruffy can be rather hard to achieve, you should be proud.

Amanda@Vox, I just finished my own assignment, so no thanks, I don’t really want to do yours :)

I get what you mean about the work/casual thing. I think because I don’t really know what I am at the moment “student” “unemployed bogan” “arty farty type” I can’t sort of choose how to style myself, my hair is extreme arty afrty at the moment, maybe I should roll with that?

P.S Good luck with your assignment, get a family block of chocolate and a big bottle of water and go for it!

Kate, isn’t it the way, the one time it does rain a bit it’s always inconveient, atleast rain would have made things look a bit greenier and prettier?

Rosanna, thanks for those sites!! I don’t buy Vogue anymore (I stalk the forums instead :P ) I find myself prefering street style than high fashion these days, I like the “realness” of the way actual people chose to dress.
