kindling & sage: Issue no. 2 | Artistry
kindling & sage is a fiercely independent print publication amplifying the voices and creative work of Bla(c)k, Women of Colour, and Gender Diverse People of Colour. For Issue no. 2: Artistry, founder and editor Natalia Garcia sought an identity that honoured the publication’s spirit while signalling its evolution and intention to grow further.
Working closely with Natalia, we developed a visual direction that introduced a confident new palette—bold enough to stand on its own, yet calibrated to sit seamlessly within the existing brand. We paired this with Bitter, an open and contemporary serif by Sol Matas, selected to complement the publication’s current type system and extend effortlessly across print, digital, and future communications.
Alongside the refreshed identity, we designed and executed the full layout for the edition. The result was an elevated and more intentional reading experience—one that strengthened the publication’s cultural and aesthetic value. The issue pre-launched at more than twice the anticipated price point and subsequently sold out.
At our suggestion, kindling & sage also registered an ISSN, securing its place within the National Library of Australia and affirming its presence as a publication of record.
