PROJECT NOTES

Social Current

Kate Gundelach arrived in Abu Dhabi with fifteen years inside the architecture of platforms — Reddit, Snap, Meta, Spotify — and a career's worth of knowledge she hadn't yet found the shape for. She knew what the market around her was getting wrong.

What she was still working out was how to position herself within it: where her professional experience ended and her practice began, and how to hold both in a single identity.

That tension turned out to be the brief.

Through the strategy process, the scope of the work expanded, from social media management to a fuller media communications offer, and the identity question sharpened from how to present a service to how to represent a point of view.

We began, as we always do, before any visual decision was made: with the thinking underneath.

Overview—

Social Current is a strategic consulting and media communications practice for founder-led brands navigating growth across platforms, markets, and cultural contexts. Kate had spent a career developing that fluency from the inside. The work was building a practice around it.

Kate's original name was CTRL Social — tech-focused, command-driven, oriented toward the machine rather than toward what she was building with her knowledge of it. Through the strategy process, the scope of the offer expanded and the positioning sharpened toward something broader and harder to replicate than social media management. A practice built on pattern recognition, cultural fluency, and fifteen years of knowing how platforms actually work.

Archetype mapping gave that offer a framework. The Magician-Connector — pattern-seeking and transformational. The Sage — whose authority is demonstrated rather than announced. Her own word for herself had always been connector. The process gave that word a structure she could build from.

The name followed. Social Current.

Current speaks to flow, direction, and the kind of fluency that comes from navigating platforms, markets, and cultures from within.

The tagline: Connection in Motion.

“I wanted to build something that worked the way I knew it could.”

Visual References—

Before any element was resolved, the visual references were assembled as a single board. A terracotta building dense with repeated geometry. A figure in blush-pink, still. Arched interiors. Light moving across green water.  A lone figure standing in a vast desert at dusk, small against sand and sky. Three notes across the whole: breezy, refined, making waves.

Two registers held in the same frame — structured and fluid, warm and cool, digital rendered with the visual language of considered living. Every decision that followed was tested against it.

Typography—

The logotype is set in Hatton, a humanist serif by Pangram Pangram — precise in its proportions, with small surprises in the details. Hatton takes its name from Hatton Garden, London's jewellery quarter and a longstanding site of trade between Europe and the MENA region. For a practice built across two geographies, the reference does functional work.

The body system runs on Inter, a variable sans-serif, screen-native, supporting over 140 languages. For a brand whose offer is platform fluency, the typeface that underpins much of the contemporary web is an argument embedded in the choice itself. Brittany Signature appears where the register shifts: headlines, direct address, moments closer to Kate's voice than to the identity's structure.

Mark—

The logomark is a small diamond above a wave. Read as digital: a pixel rotated forty-five degrees. Read as landscape: a sun above a dune, a horizon above water — something ancient and unhurried above the movement of the sea.

Social Current sits at the crossing point of two geographies. The UAE: desert stillness, the timelessness of sand and sky. Australia: coastal ease, the lightness of a culture that lives at the edge of an ocean. Kate moved her family to the UAE by choice. She knows both from the inside. The mark holds that without explaining it.

Colours & Graphic Language—

The colour system follows the same geographical logic as the logomark. Seagrass Deep Teal anchors the palette — depth and trust without the weight of corporate navy. Terracotta Ember, Coral Drift, Desert Milk, and Afterlight Haze sit around it: the quality of light at dusk in two very different places, built into a system.

The full identity covers logotype, logomark, avatar suite, typographic hierarchy, colour palette, imagery direction, and application across digital, stationery, and merchandise. Imagery was developed across three categories — people and culture, natural elements, and built environments — each carrying its own register, and each tested against the same board that opened the project.

The result is an identity that reads as a practice — with the range and depth of what Kate has spent a career building.
